Patrick Chaneac

Born in 1961, in Lyon, Patrick Chaneac is a self-taught painter and sculptor. Patrick studied biology before joining the Ecole Normale and intending to teach. Patrick has been exhibiting in France and Switzerland since the 90s. His work revolves around the paving of the surface using geometric shapes, solid colors which are punctuated with imprints, graphics, and symbols. Patrick also uses acrylic paint, gouache, and glycerophtalic lacquers.

Patrick makes sculptures and paintings that are closely linked, through the materials used and the working techniques.

He often works in series:

Patrick's Art Philosophy:
The basis of my work is based on geometric structures. Before starting a painting, I first think of an arrangement of forms. These geometric shapes will completely cover the surface. I use different geometric shapes to cover the surface.
The figures that I use the most are the square, the circle, the rectangle and the triangle. So I create an arrangement of these shapes. On the other hand I design for certain pavings a unique geometric shape which will undergo translations, rotations, symmetries. It is a technique used for a very long time in the field of mosaic. It allows kinetic effects. Mathematicians have listed a certain number of basic tessellations, 17 in number. The leading lines are grooved in the wood which I use as a support for the acrylic paint.

The second axis of my work is based on color. I work a lot with flat tints using color contrasts, oppositions.
Finally, the third axis of my work consists in using a certain number of signs that I will produce on the flat areas of color in order to nuance the colors. These signs, symbols open up a new language by inviting the viewer to walk through the work, to appropriate it. They create an interaction.
