ZAVE NELSON

How May We Assist You?

Zave was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He never met his mother. As a child Zave was a problem child, and stayed in trouble. Zave was introduced to art and in his words “art changed his outlook on life and has brought him closer to God. He now looks upon his life and talents as a gift, for which he is very thankful.

"I am of the father, as the father is of me; therefore I do the will of him, through the expression of my craft."

Comments by the Assistant Curator

Zave Nelson's work is a story of where he has come from. As a young boy, Nelson lived a life of trouble and suffered from never meeting his mother. When Nelson began working with art, he started growing and realizing that what was missing in his life was God. The viewer is able to see the growth in faith was present in Nelson’s life due to his Biblical themes in his work. Biblical art is not new to the art scene. Early Christian artwork really began to show around the 3rd-7th century but is still flourishing into the present. There are Biblical Art museums popping up around the country. Nelson’s work shows both Bible passages and spirituality. Jerusalem and Man’s First Sin cover stories of creation. Love 91 shares about one of the responsibilities of being a Christian (due to the cross symbol in the piece) is to love your neighbor as yourself and to play a positive role in fellow people’s lives.

Along with a religious background in Nelson’s work, Surrealism and Symbolism plays a role in his pieces. Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali, two Surrealist painters, created their artwork with symbols and Freudian theories. Nelson’s artwork contains multiple layers. At first glance, the viewer sees a compilation of images and subjects but then is able to bring their own experiences into the piece and dissect Nelson’s true intention.

A Deeper Look: A Conversation with the Artist

Creating art is powerful. However, the healing process of art making could be even stronger. Zave Nelson, a Michigan artist, has always had art be a part of his life. He has a unique story. Nelson grew up never knowing his mother. When he was younger, it was hateful and spiteful for not meeting his mom. Art has helped him cope with this lost relationship and has humbled him. “I know she loves me and she is just not ready to be around right now.”

Nelson is a self-taught artist. He believes in education but it wasn’t what he wanted to do and wasn’t a part of him. He can become an artist without it. There is a phrase that has stuck with Nelson throughout his life that his grandmother once said to him: “You never want to learn from the books from school. Even though you were a good student you always learned through life.”

Nelson’s grandmother has been the most inspiring and impactful person in his life. He grew up going to church, one of which that his grandma led. Nelson’s work has spiritual subject matter and/or themes. His childhood left a mark on what he wanted to create. Even though Nelson left the church due to the politics, he respected the time he spent growing with his grandmother. “From being out in life I came to know what I believed and started creating art. Art is your inspiration, your beliefs and your vision.”
